Is real competition returning to the mortgage market?

The Australian mortgage market may be on the cusp of a resurgence in competition, as new players vow to enter (or re-enter) the market to provide greater choice for choice-strapped homebuyers.

Recently, Macquarie Bank announced it would return to the market, with its Macquarie Mortgage Solution offering. Likewise, Virgin and Citibank have partnered to create a new banking vehicle, which is expected to offer mortgages in the near future, as part of a second phase of the group's launch.

Are these moves a sign that real competition is returning to the mortgage market?
