The parliamentary inquiry into the four majors has given a clear sign to the Government and regulators to urgently address increasing competition in retail banking.

The opportunity was lost years ago by myopic government. Purchase of Bank SA, St George, Bank West, Bank of Melbourne etc by majors should have been blocked and a policy of mergers promoted to create 5, 6 or 7 larger banks to get both required economies of scale and healthy competition.
