Ben Sutton: The Australian Mortgage Awards are always the biggest night of the year for the best in the mortgage broking business. But this year has been even more special. Held in Sydney’s historic town hall, the glamour event has celebrated 10 years of awarding excellence in broking and business development management.
As usual the night has been attended by a Who’s Who of the mortgage industry and 2011 proceedings have been hosted by Rugby League Legend, Peter Sterling. This year’s Australian Broker of the Year is Mark Davis from the Australian Lending and Investment Centre. Westpac has been pleased to present the award to Mark who is clearly passionate about his work.
Mark Davis, The Australian Lending & Investment Centre
Mark Davis: It’s something I love. I love property, I love structures, I love gearing, I love investments, I love lending, I love banking, I love cash flows. So if you actually bring all that together, it’s very powerful.
Ben Sutton: Proving there is still plenty of life for new brokers in the industry, the Australian Young Gun of the Year has been another hotly contested award, the title finally going to Andrew Morel from Club Financial Services.
Andrew Morel, Club Financial Services
Andrew Morel: It’s actually most able to pat in the back and work hard. It’s a small business but at the end of the day, yeah look if a few other people are taking notice then it’s, that’s a good feeling.
Ben Sutton: This year’s Australian BDM of the year is Connective’s Fiona Brown, who says she is still coming to terms with the honour.
Fiona Brown, Connective
Fiona Brown: Look it is very competitive. So I am really happy and rapt to take this award out tonight.
Ben Sutton: It’s also been a very successful night for Oxygen Home Loans culminating in the company taking out the Australian Brokerage of the Year. Peter Ellis from Oxygen says the award represents the pinnacle of a period of growth for the organisation.
Peter Ellis, Oxygen Home Loans
Peter Ellis: We had a significant increase in our volumes over the last twelve months. We have put on lot of quality brokers, we are training, developing those brokers and I think the results speak for themselves.
Ben Sutton: Wendy Higgins is no stranger to taking the stage at the Australian Mortgage Awards. Winning among other [gowns] the Australian Broker of the Year in 2010, but this year has been something different. For the first time a Golden [Mogie] for lifetime achievement in the industry has gone to a broker. With all agreeing Wendy is a very worthy recipient.
Wendy Higgins, Mortgage Choice
Wendy Higgins: I am driven from within to do the right thing, to get things done, to look after people.
Ben Sutton: Another highlight of the evening is being Cube Central, taking home Brokerage of year diversification.
Jo Beattie, Cube Central
Jo Beattie: I think he absolutely very deserves this more than I think anyone realises I want him to have this tonight, this is his glory, he deserved it.
Ben Sutton: But although some happy tears were shed, it has been all smiles as the industry danced and partied the night away. The perfect birthday celebration for a prestigious event that grows with every passing year. This is Ben Sutton for Australian Broker News TV.
