The political commentary regarding retrospective changes to negative gearing is concerning, the real estate and construction partner at an international accounting firm has warned

No political party that matters, or any credible think tank has suggested retrospective changes. That's probably why this article hasn't quoted any. In fact, when there's no substantial foundation, articles like this might cause damage from undue speculation.

By 'retrospective', the author meant existing properties already acquired on which negative gearing losses had been claimed. This was indeed reported in the Australian Financial Review a while back, so this wasn't speculation. The article was not talking about going back to previous income years and removing negative gearing benefits retrospectively.
