The Commonwealth Bank of Australia is helping charities with contactless donations through the launch of its new Smart Giving app.

CBA data suggested that more and more Aussies are embracing contactless and digital wallet payments for charitable donations, with donations made using a digital wallet increasing both in number (55%) and value (61%) year-on-year.

The new CBA app offers a convenient way to accept donations via CBA’s Smart EFTPOS terminal. Its features include preset or custom amounts and automatic donation receipts that donors may use to claim income tax deductions. And because CBA’s Smart EFTPOS terminal has enhanced connectivity with Dual Sim and wi-fi, charities can consistently stay up and running, as well as accept donations on the go.

“We know the way businesses receive payments is continuing to go digital, so it’s natural this would flow-on to charity organisations,” said James Fowle, CBA executive general manager everyday business banking. “The Smart Giving app allows for a smooth ‘tap-to-donate’ payments experience. Australia’s charity sector plays a significant role in both our national economy and local communities and Smart Giving offers convenience and more flexibility for both donors and charities.”

Denis Moriarty, group managing director of Our Community, a social enterprise providing training to Australia’s 600,000 not-for-profit organisations and schools, believes the new app will help charities that have struggled to keep up with digital payments.

“Our Community is very excited by the new Commonwealth Bank app, as anything that can be done to help community groups is going to help advance the nation’s social fabric,” Moriarty said. “We are seeing volunteers drop off at a rate never seen before, as is giving, and this app will help local community groups make communities stronger.”

Available on CBA’s Smart EFTPOS terminal, the app can be downloaded within its App Marketplace.
