The Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) has launched its first Micro-skills course, Scam Awareness and Prevention, designed to help brokers identify, prevent, and respond to scams targeting their businesses and clients.
The course forms part of the MFAA’s new Micro-skills learning series – short, focused, and practical training modules tailored for time-poor brokers who want to upskill in key professional areas.
The launch follows a major milestone for broker education, with MFAA recently celebrating its first round of graduates from the Mortgage Finance Professional Australia (MFPA) designation. The program, developed with RMIT Online, represents the industry’s first university-level qualification for brokers – reflecting MFAA’s push to elevate education standards across the profession.
MFAA CEO Anja Pannek (pictured) said the new course delivers valuable, actionable insights to address real-world risks faced by brokers handling sensitive client data.
“As trusted professionals, brokers manage confidential client data and play a vital role in safeguarding consumer trust,” Pannek said.
“This new Micro-skills course helps brokers recognise warning signs, take practical steps to prevent scams, and strengthen their cyber awareness, which is a critical aspect of running a high-quality and secure broking business.
“It’s particularly valuable for busy brokers who need to quickly brush up on their knowledge in this area and stay ahead of the curve.”
The Scam Awareness and Prevention course explores the most common scams impacting the mortgage and finance industry – including payment redirection, email interception, and impersonation scams.
Participants learn to identify risk factors, spot potential warning signs, and apply practical strategies to protect themselves and their clients from financial harm.
Members who complete the course are encouraged to use MFAA’s “What to do if you’ve been scammed” resource in the Broker Toolbox, which offers step-by-step guidance on prevention, response, and reporting procedures.
The Scam Awareness and Prevention course is worth 0.5 CPD hour and is available now to MFAA members through the Learning Hub.
Further Micro-skills courses on industry-relevant topics are in development as part of the MFAA’s ongoing professional education framework.
