Ms. Mortgages in action: How Annette Jordan makes broking fun

News

By Mina Martin

After two decades in corporate banking, Annette Jordan (pictured) walked away from the boardroom to build a broking career on her own terms. Today she’s “Ms. Mortgages” – a broker blending expertise with personality, passion, and plenty of heart.

Known for “making sense of the nonsense” in home lending, she’s become a self-described mortgage matchmaker who loves helping turn “maybe someday” into keys-in-hand moments for clients.

From corporate leader to mortgage matchmaker

With more than 20 years of “banking wizardry” behind her – including 11 years at Westpac and international project work in the UK and South Korea – Jordan hit a turning point.

“I had a classic midlife ‘what-am-I-doing?’ moment,” she says.

Craving independence, creativity, and work she genuinely loved, Jordan left corporate life at the end of 2024 and stepped fully into mortgage broking – a passion she had nurtured on the side for years. She now loves cutting through fine print, decoding complex lending rules, and fighting the good fight with lenders to get the right deal.

“Helping someone get into their dream home? It doesn’t get better than that,” she says.

And yes, Jordan freely admits she gets “a little excited about well-organised tables – it’s my thing!”

Alongside running her business, Jordan is also a proud foster mum.

“Being a boss lady and making my own rules? Honestly, I love it,” she says.

Tech, training and a more human industry

Jordan says the most positive transformation in broking has been technology.

“Technology has transformed the industry — and I’m fully embracing the change!” she says.

Jordan believes AI will reshape broking entirely: “I think AI will truly revolution the industry, and we’re just at the very start.”

But for her, tech’s real value is that it enhances – not replaces – the human side of the job. It lets brokers spend more time celebrating wins with clients and bringing personality into the process.

Jordan also praised improvements in onboarding across the industry, highlighting her aggregator, Nectar, for its hands-on approach.

“They were amazing – supportive every step of the way,” she says. “It made me appreciate just how highly trained brokers are and the real expertise we bring to the table.”

And then there’s her mentor.

“I literally couldn’t have done this without him,” Jordan said of David Johnson from Home Loan Partners. “He’s not just ‘an hour a month’ kind of mentor – he’s there when I need him… mentorship like that is priceless.”

Industry challenges: Complexity meets opportunity

Jordan says the biggest current challenge is the growing complexity of lending products and compliance requirements – especially for new brokers.

Her solution? Technology-driven simplicity, client-first communication, and structured workflows through strong aggregator support.

“Combine that with persistence, empathy, and a little personality, and you get a seamless, client-friendly experience that makes mortgage broking fun and approachable,” Jordan says.

Career highlights and lessons learned

Jordan’s career spans everything from major strategic banking projects to international transformations – but broking brought her back to what matters.

“One of the biggest lessons? No matter how far you go in banking, it’s the people and the stories that make the work meaningful,” she says.

Helping Australians into homes reaffirmed that “doing work you love and making a real difference” is the ultimate professional reward.

Advice for aspiring brokers

Jordan's advice is equal parts heart and hustle.

“Follow your passion… bring your personality to the table,” she says. “Mortgage broking doesn’t have to be boring – inject fun, curiosity, and empathy into every client interaction.”

Jordan urges new brokers to embrace training, seek genuine mentors, and not be afraid of wearing all the hats – business owner, parent, adviser, and everything in between.

“You can do it all – and enjoy the ride!”
