Melbourne is bracing for an economic windfall this weekend as the city hosts Australia's first regular season NFL match, a sold-out fixture between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.
NAB merchant data indicates the event could inject more than $300 million into local businesses, with the CBD, Docklands, and the MCG precinct expected to absorb the bulk of visitor spending.
The forecast draws on transaction patterns recorded during Melbourne's AFL Finals series, scaled up to reflect the scope of interstate and international travel the NFL fixture is forecast to draw.
Hotels, pubs, restaurants and retailers are among the sectors tipped to benefit most, as fans converge on the city from across Australia and abroad for the historic game.
Cameron Ziebell, NAB business executive, said the scale of the event underscored Melbourne's standing among global event cities.
"Big events like this are great for Melbourne businesses," Ziebell said. "We're expecting more than $300 million to be spent across hotels, restaurants, pubs, and retailers over the NFL weekend as visitors flock to the city for Australia's first regular season NFL game."
He added that the nine-figure spending forecast represented a rare opportunity for hospitality venues to convert one-off visitors into regulars.
The forecast comes despite a more downbeat national mood. Westpac-Melbourne Institute data released this week showed consumer sentiment sliding 5.2% in September, with job security concerns rising "significantly" among construction and hospitality workers.
Even so, individual venues are preparing for a packed few days. Among them is The Imperial Hotel, which has been named the official Seattle Seahawks venue partner for the event, despite the Seahawks themselves not featuring in this fixture.
Venue manager Christopher McInnes said the partnership marked a significant moment for the business.
"We're expecting one of our busiest weekends of the year, with fans travelling from across Australia and overseas," McInnes said.
He described the venue's role as "Seahawks House" as a gathering point for local and visiting supporters alike, adding it was "an exciting opportunity to showcase what Melbourne hospitality does best."
The NFL fixture marks a rare instance of top-tier American sport being staged on Australian soil, with flow-on economic effects expected to be felt well beyond matchday itself.
