Macquarie keeps gaining ground as brokers drive the switch

Macquarie Bank’s home loan portfolio has reached $198.2 billion, up 9% since 31 March 2026, lifting its share of the Australian mortgage market to 7.6%.

The figures were released alongside Macquarie Group’s result for the half year to 30 September 2026. Group net profit rose 50% on the same period last year to $2,478 million. The result was the last under outgoing chief executive Shemara Wikramanayake, who is retiring after eight years in the role, with Greg Ward taking over as chief executive.

Brokers driving the switch

Macquarie’s head of home loan and commercial broker sales, Wendy Brown (pictured), said the growth was part of a longer-term trend.

“More Australians are looking beyond their legacy banking relationships and partnering with brokers to find greater value and a better experience from their lender,” Brown said.

Industry data backs that up, with brokers writing a record 81.6% of new home loans in the June quarter, according to the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia (MFAA).

Brown said many borrowers have spent the past year reviewing their finances and weighing up whether refinancing makes sense, with brokers playing a central role.

“Brokers are often at the centre of those conversations, helping customers understand their options and navigate what can be a complex process,” she said.

Margins under pressure

Macquarie’s banking and financial services division, which houses its home lending business, delivered a net profit contribution of $841 million, up 6% from $793 million in the first half of last financial year.

The group said the result reflected growth in loans and deposits, partly offset by lower margins due to portfolio mix changes and competition for both lending and deposits, along with higher credit provisions and expenses. Group deposits rose 10% to $244.2 billion over the half.

Scaling up without slowing down

More changes for brokers are on the way, with Brown flagging new tools and policy updates to be rolled out over the coming weeks and months.

She said maintaining service standards remains a priority as the loan book grows. The bank is expanding its locally based credit and business development manager teams, streamlining processes to protect its turnaround times, and continuing to upgrade its digital platforms.
