The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) has created a new role to help round out its executive team.

Anna Campbell has been welcomed to the newly-created position of general counsel.

Campbell previously served as GM of enterprise compliance at the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), where she was responsible for the group's regulatory assurance function, involving Corporations Act licence obligations, privacy, competition and other statutory obligations.

She also acted as deputy general counsel at the ASX for nine years, and Allianz as acting general counsel before that. Campbell was also a lawyer in both the private and public sector.

AFCA CEO and chief ombudsman David Locke said, “The role of general counsel is a pivotal appointment for AFCA.

“Anna’s cross-sector and regulatory experience, along with her knowledge of the financial services sector means she is exceptionally well placed to provide expert advice on complex legal matters, corporate governance and risk management.

“AFCA will benefit greatly from her skills and experience and I am delighted that she has chosen to join us.”

According to Locke, the senior executive team assembled over recent months has ideally positioned the body to deliver on its goal of providing “world-class ombudsman service.”

Campbell has expressed excitement over assuming her new position, particularly given it’s such a dynamic time for the industry.

She said, “AFCA operates in a complex and changing environment, and the functions of corporate governance and risk are more important than ever.

“I am excited about the challenge and look forward to shaping the way AFCA delivers it legal and compliance functions.”
