Bank of Sydney splits banking division, appoints dual chief officers

Bank of Sydney has restructured its executive leadership, appointing Sam Tomaras (pictured left) as chief retail banking officer and Hisham Nakkash (pictured right) as chief business banking officer, splitting oversight of its banking divisions into two dedicated roles.

Restructure follows retirement and strategic review

The appointments follow the planned retirement of long-serving chief banking officer Huw Bough, which prompted a review of the bank's divisional structure.

According to the bank, that review determined that establishing dedicated executive leadership across retail and business banking would provide "greater focus on key growth segments, strengthen customer relationship management, and decision-making and further support the bank's growth strategy."

Both new appointees will join the executive team, sitting alongside McKenna's other direct reports.

McKenna, who was confirmed as permanent CEO in July after a period as acting chief executive, framed the changes as part of a broader push to build out the bank's leadership following its "core banking transformation."

"As we continue building on the strong foundations established through Bank of Sydney's transformation journey, we remain focused on ensuring we have the right leadership team in place to support our customers, the community and to drive sustainable growth," he said.

Two brokers-relevant portfolios take shape

Tomaras will oversee the bank's retail banking channels and customer offerings, spanning the branch network, premium banking, lending, deposits, the customer service centre, and third-party distribution — the channel through which broker-originated commercial and residential loans flow, now sitting under his remit. He joined Bank of Sydney in February 2024 as Head of Business Banking and brings more than two decades of experience across St.George Bank, Westpac, GE Capital, and HSBC.

Nakkash will lead the bank's business banking portfolio, including SME and commercial banking, business relationship management, business development, and trade finance. He rejoins Bank of Sydney from Westpac, having previously spent nine years in senior business banking roles at the bank, with earlier experience at Bank of Beirut. McKenna described him as "an accomplished banking leader with deep commercial banking expertise and a strong understanding of our organisation."
