ANZ has announced that Maile Carnegie (pictured) will retire as group executive Australia retail on July 1, marking the close of a 33-year executive career and nine years with the bank.

Carnegie first joined ANZ in 2016 as group executive digital banking from Google, where she led its Australian operations. She later spearheaded ANZ’s flagship digital banking platform, ANZ Plus, and was also involved in the bank’s $4.9 billion acquisition of Suncorp Bank, now in the early stages of integration.

“A significant impact” across digital, marketing, and retail

ANZ CEO Nuno Matos acknowledged Carnegie’s wide-ranging contributions.

“Since joining ANZ in 2016, Maile has had a significant impact across payments, marketing, digitisation and most recently leading our retail business in Australia,” Matos said in a media release

“When I joined ANZ last month, Maile informed me of her desire to transition to a non-executive career outside the bank.

“I wish to extend my appreciation for her efforts in supporting my early days as CEO. On behalf of everyone at ANZ, I wish her well with the next phase of her career and thank her for all her efforts.”

Matos, who is six weeks into the top job, has made accelerating project delivery a key priority. He has called for faster ANZ Plus migration and reshuffled executive responsibilities to streamline digital and Suncorp Bank integration.

Carnegie will remain involved during July to support a comprehensive transition.

Suncorp Bank CEO Bruce Rush named acting retail chief

ANZ has appointed Bruce Rush, current CEO of Suncorp Bank, as acting group executive Australia Retail & Suncorp Bank. He will take over on July 1 while the bank undertakes a global search for a permanent replacement.

Rush joined Suncorp Bank in 2010 from Santander UK and has held senior positions across strategy, deposits, and home lending, becoming Suncorp Bank CEO in August 2024.

“Bruce is an experienced retail banker who has done an outstanding job as CEO of Suncorp Bank,” Matos said.

“His appointment will also assist with the migration of Suncorp Bank customers to ANZ, while we conduct a global search for the next leader of our retail business in Australia.”

Analysts expect further executive changes under Matos, whose international background could lead to external appointments. Industry speculation includes former Westpac and NatWest retail leader David Lindberg as a possible candidate, AFR reported
