Former Australia and NSW Waratahs rugby union international Phil Waugh has been appointed as the new Executive, Broker Distribution at NAB.

Waugh has switched from Westpac, where he had previously been Head of Private Wealth North, In that role, he had led a team of more than 200 employees and headed up the business divison’s response to the pandemic.

While most will know him as a result of his glittering sporting career, Waugh has years of experience within the banking sector, having completed education at the University of Sydney and subsequently headed up the Auto Finance at St George Bank and as Head of Asset Finance at CBA as well as his most recent position at Westpac.

“Phil is an exceptional leader and experienced banker, with a proven track record in driving great customer outcomes, in particular in intermediated distribution,” said Andy Kerr, Exectuve, Home Ownership at NAB.

“His leadership will ensure we build on the momentum we are seeing in our broking business as we remain focused on delivering Australia’s simplest home loan and strengthening our position as the bank behind the broker. Phil’s passion for customers, and success driving high-performing teams will be an asset for the broker business and I’m excited about what he will bring to NAB.”

Waugh takes on the role that was departed by the retirement of Steve Kane late last year. Kane has since come out of retirement to work at Loan Market Group. Waugh will not start immediately and Nicole Triandos, who has been in post in an acting basis since Kane left, will continue until Waugh assumes the role in June.

“I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues at NAB to grow the business and deliver exceptional service to brokers and their customers,” said Waugh. “Brokers play a significant role in the Australian community in providing access to credit and driving competition, and this contribution continues to grow.”
